8th grade students created an AMAZING ocean mural in connection with Environmental Education Awareness Week. Our mural canvas was supplied to us through Fredrix Art Canvas and the Wyland Foundation. Our theme was 'Celebrate Oceans Beauty...Keep it Clean'.

2010 Has Been Busy!
Our art department at ACS has been so busy the second half of the school year! I haven't even had time to keep this blog updated!
Here are some highlights:
In February, our 8th graders helped raised funds for their upcoming DC trip in June by selling Valentine cards! The fundraiser was also for the Carla Cowell scholarship fund. The handmade cards were a huge hit! We raised $279 in a few short days!
In March, we celebrated Youth Art Month! We were fortunate enough to have a visiting artist come to our school thanks to the Pamlico County Arts Council. Tunde Afolayan was a wonderful experience for our kids and we were able to have two workshops for the 4th and 5th grade. Below are images from his visit. You can also check out Tunde's website at, www.tundevisualart.com

Oaxacan Clay Animals!
7th grade students have created amazing clay animals in art class! These animals were inspired by the Oaxacan wood carvings produced in Mexico. Oaxacan wood carvings is a form of folk art in their country and are painted with elaborate colors and patterns. This is a picture from our 1st semester 7th grade class before the animals were fired in the kiln and painted. Our 2nd semester 7th grade class clay animals will be posted soon! Stay tuned!
